How Do You Define Success?

January 10, 2017 by Claire Brown Kohler

While there are many ways to define success, one universal definition is achieving the goals we set outDefine Success for ourselves. No matter how you define success, there are clear steps to take to achieve success.

During the Olympics, I was blown away by Kohei Uchimura , the Japanese Gymnast. He won 8 World and Olympic gold medals in 8 years. His path is truly inspiring. He started doing gymnastics when he was 3 years old but he was behind everyone else in the class. That did not discourage him. Instead, he became obsessed with gymnastics. Kohei drew pictures of impossible tricks. He used his stuffed bear to practice these tricks on. He watched hours of a Japanese cartoon about a spectacular gymnast. He focused as much energy as he could on becoming a great gymnast and the end result was a record-setting gold medal count.

Kohei took a desire, turned it into a burning obsession, created an action plan which his mother supported without fail and he practiced practiced practiced. Now, most of us will not become Gold Medal Olympians but we can ALL learn something from Kohei’s example.

Here are what I have found to be the three most essential steps. In the weeks ahead, I am going to expand on each of these steps.

Step 1: Know What You Want

Take the time to create a goal. This seems obvious but many people don’t even take this first step. So, think about what you want to create a specific and clearly defined goal. One thing to keep in mind is that our goals can and often will shift a bit to reflect our changes and reality. And very important: make sure that your goals excite and energize you!

Step 2: Create an Organized Plan

It’s wonderful to have a goal, but unless you have a plan for accomplishing it, you run the risk of floundering. You need a map to get you to your destination. This requires you taking the time out of your busy schedule to actually create that plan!

Step 3: Don’t Give Up!!!

This is possibly the hardest step of all! This is where the rubber hits the road or you stay parked in your driveway.

Have you created your goals yet? Before sure to come back again for more details on how to implement these 3 steps to reach your success!
